Toru Dutt, A Digital Edition Begins

During the fall and spring of 2009-2010 students in the graduate program at the University of North Carolina Greensboro will be using this site to construct a digital edition of selected poems by the Indian poet, Toru Dutt (1856-1877).

Toru Dutt's poems were initially published in Calcutta (now Kolkata) and London.  Her first collection, A Sheaf Gleaned in French Fields, consisted of translations from the French.  It included contemporary poems rendered into English by Toru, along with a few translations by her sister Aru and her father Govin Chunder Dutt.  Her collection of original poetry, Ancient Ballads and Legends of Hindustan, appeared posthumously, edited by her father. Both collections are now available on Googlebooks. A modern edition of her work is available in India, and several poems now appear in anthologies.

In order to make her work more fully accessible to lovers of poetry we are creating this small digital edition. We hope our links, maps, historical and biographical background, and annotations will enrich your reading experience.

We are now selecting the poems to present.  If you have a favorite, we'd like to hear from you.

Please revisit us over the course of the year to see what develops.
